Taper-tip shafts get smaller where the shaft fits into the hosel. They're manufactured with constant weights and to the proper length for each club.

Parallel-tip shafts have a constant diameter and are the same for each iron. They need to be trimmed to fit the length for each club, resulting in heavier shafts in the long irons and less weight in the short irons.
