Golf Shoe FAQs
Does Golf Galaxy offer different golf shoe widths?
Yes. Golf Galaxy offers golf shoes in narrow, medium, wide and extra-wide sizes.
What is the difference between waterproof and water-resistant golf shoes?
Water-resistant golf shoes may help repel water, but there is no guarantee. Your feet may get wet while wearing water-resistant golf shoes on damp or soggy turf. Waterproof golf shoes, however, are guaranteed to keep your feet 100% dry for a specified amount of time - often up to two years depending on the manufacturer.
How long should my golf shoes last?
If you clean your shoes after every round and avoid storing them in extreme temperatures, you should get at least three to four seasons out of your shoes, possibly more. However, if you frequently play in wet conditions without properly drying and cleaning the shoes, or if you store the shoes in extreme temperatures like a hot trunk or a cold garage, you may only get one season out of your shoes.
When should I replace my golf shoes?
If you begin to slip during your swing or even while walking the course, it is likely time for a new pair, as the loss of stability can be hugely detrimental to your game. If you notice diminishing comfort due to worn-down insoles, or if the shoes lose their waterproof qualities, you'll want to upgrade.
How do I know when to change my golf spikes?
If you wear spiked golf shoes, you should consider replacing the spikes every 10 to 15 rounds, or as soon as you notice a loss of stability.
How do I replace my golf spikes?
First, consider purchasing a golf spike replacement wrench or kit from Golf Galaxy. You can also shop our extensive selection of replacement spikes. Once you have the materials you need, follow these steps:
- Clean the outsole, removing all dirt and debris.
- Place your removal wrench/tool onto the spike, turning it counterclockwise to remove the spike. The spike should loosen after one turn. Once removed, discard the spike.
- Clean the area where the spike was removed, digging out any remaining dirt and debris. Use a towel to wipe the area clean.
- Use your fingers to begin screwing in the replacement spike. Place the wrench/tool around the spike and turn clockwise if additional tightening is needed.
- Repeat the process for any remaining spikes that need replaced.
How do I clean my golf shoes?
After each round, wipe down your uppers with soap and warm water. Wipe away all grass and dirt from the outsoles. If you wear spiked golf shoes, consider unscrewing the spikes to remove dirt trapped underneath. Allow the shoes to dry at room temperature. DO NOT leave your shoes to dry in direct sunlight, and NEVER use an external heat source such a hair dryer to dry your shoes.
How should I store my golf shoes?
If you want to store your shoes in optimal conditions, place a cedar shoe tree in each shoe and store them in a golf shoe bag. DO NOT store your golf shoes in high-temperature conditions, like in the trunk of your car or in direct sunlight, as this can cause the upper and outsole materials to deteriorate at an accelerated rate.
If you shoes get wet during a rainy round, stuff each shoe with newspaper and allow them to dry between 8-10 hours. The newspaper will help absorb excess moisture.
What are the main differences between spiked and spikeless golf shoes?
Spiked golf shoes have cleats on the outsole. These cleats, typically made of soft plastic, lock into the turf to provide stability. Spikeless golf shoes feature rubber studs or dimples that grip the turf.
Spikeless golf shoes are still relatively new to the market, and many golfers believe traditional spiked golf shoes provide the best traction. However, today's spikeless golf shoes are so advanced that most styles provide equal traction to their spiked counterparts. Spiked golf shoes may provide more traction on soggy turf.
Why wear spikeless golf shoes?
Not only do today's spikeless golf shoes provide incredible traction and support, they also offer convenience. Most spikeless golf shoes can be worn just like a pair of casual shoes. This means you can put them on at home, drive to the course, play your round and head right to the 19th hole without needing to change as you would need to when wearing spiked golf shoes.
What are the differences between leather golf shoes and synthetic golf shoes?
Leather golf shoes are more expensive, but, generally, that is because they offer higher quality than synthetic. Leather will fit the form of your feet over time for custom-like comfort. Leather also has waterproof qualities not found in synthetic materials. Still, synthetic golf shoes can offer incredible comfort and performance. Consider making your decision based on how often you play. If you play weekly in various conditions, you'll likely be better served by leather. If you're more of a casual player, synthetic should be fine. Think about owning a pair of each and rotating the shoes as needed. You may also want to consider a pair of mesh golf shoes to keep your feet cool on hot, humid days.
